The homogeneity parameter
What it does
Variance-homogeneity test: "brown-forsythe" (Levene based on the median, the default) or "levene" (based on the mean, as SPSS T-TEST). Also accepted: "median", "mean", TRUE (= brown-forsythe), FALSE (= levene).
The table is titled "Levene (based on median)" or "Levene (based on mean)".
Case and spaces around do not matter ("Levene"). Another value is an error: homogeneity must be brown-forsythe or levene (or true, false, median, mean), got "levine".
Values
Optional; default "brown-forsythe".
Allowed values: "brown-forsythe", "levene"
In plain words
Before comparing averages, the program checks whether the groups are spread out about the same, and this setting picks how. With levene it looks at how far each mark is from the average of its group. With brown-forsythe, the usual choice, it looks at how far each mark is from the middle mark of its group. In a class where one pupil scored 2 among marks near 80, levene said the groups were spread differently, while brown-forsythe said they were about alike. One odd mark pulls an average much more than it pulls a middle mark.
Where you use it
STATS_INDEPENDENT— Independent-samples t-test for two groups: the two selected columns are the groups.STATS_ANOVA— One-way ANOVA: each selected column is a group. Classic (Student) or Welch ANOVA, chosen by welch (auto by default), with homogeneity of variances and post-hoc comparisons.
Examples
"brown-forsythe""levene"
