The method parameter

What it does

Bootstrap scheme: "pairs" resamples whole rows, "residual" resamples the residuals of the fitted model.

Allowed: "pairs" or "residual" (case does not matter); anything else is an error: method must be pairs or residual, got "resid".

Values

Optional; default "pairs".

Allowed values: "pairs", "residual"

In plain words

A nurse asked 30 kids about sleep and wanted a range for the points of test score that go with each hour of sleep. With method pairs, the computer drew whole kids again and again, keeping each kid's sleep and score together, and the range came out 1 to 7 points. With method residual, it kept her straight line and drew again only how far each kid landed from it, and the range came out 2 to 6. The narrower one fits only when those misses are about the same size for all kids. Pairs does not need that, so it is the usual start.
