In plain words
A teacher sorted the scores of 100 students from lowest to highest and wanted one spot in that line. With q 0.5 she got the middle one, 70, so about half of the students scored below 70. With q 0.8 she got 85, so about 80 of the 100 students scored below 85. Before, she could only see the average, which said nothing about the top students. Now she can pick the spot in the line she cares about, such as the score a student needs to be in the top fifth: 85.
