The standardized parameter

What it does

TRUE to add standardized alpha (SPSS: Based on Standardized Items).

TRUE, 1 or their text turn it on; FALSE, 0, their text or empty turn it off. Anything else is an error: standardized must be TRUE or FALSE (or 1, 0), got "yes".

Computed from the mean correlation between items, so it does not depend on the scale of each item.

Adds two columns to the main table and one to the 'Alpha if item deleted' table. FALSE or empty: no standardized alpha.

Values

Optional.

In plain words

A survey had one question answered from 1 to 5 and another answered from 1 to 10. The usual alpha, which shows how well the questions hang together, came out about 70 parts of 100, and the question with the wider answers counted for more in it. With standardized switched to TRUE, the report adds the standardized alpha, which gives every question the same weight, and it came out about 78 parts of 100. Now the teacher can see how well the questions fit when the size of their answers does not matter. With FALSE or nothing written, this extra number is not shown.
