The type parameter
What it does
Confidence interval type: "two-sided", "greater" (bounds [lower, ∞)) or "less" (bounds (−∞, upper]); 1 and -1 (number or text) mean greater and less.
Case and spaces around do not matter. Another value is an error: type must be two-sided, greater or less (or 1, -1), got "grater".
Values
Optional.
In plain words
A cafe owner found an average wait of 4.7 minutes. With type two-sided, her range was 4.0 to 5.4 minutes, with an end on each side. Her only worry was that waits might be too long, so she tried type less. The answer became up to 5.3 minutes, with no lower end. With type greater it would be from 4.1 minutes upward, with no upper end. Now she can say that the average wait is probably not more than 5.3 minutes, which answers her worry. She chooses the type before looking at the waits.
